Zendrum Question 2008/02/10 08:11
Joe asked:

This probably isn't the place for this, but I'm going to ask anyway. This post is for Tony, if you would take the time to read this I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm a 27 year old drummer with a bad arm from an accident. Surgery left me with a titanuim shaft, two screws and a limited range of movement compared to what I used to have. Needless to say it has really affected my drumming and I was considering making the switch over to a zendrum. What kind of timeframe did it take you to learn this new instrument? Are there any special exercises you do to build your proficiency? Also, what kind of equipment will I need to make the switch? Any other thoughts or ideas you have that may help me would be appreciated, having very little past experience I am a novice at best when it comes to playing electric percussion.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this as there aren't alot of zendrummers out there to ask.

-Joe

What's the range of your motion? I can made a lot of noise without moving my arms much.

It didn't take me long to develop my zendrum style and configuration. I had the basics down in a few sessions. It took me a bit to figure out how to make two hands sound like two hands and two feet...

I don't do any special exercises per se, just playing more often seems to keep my zen chops up to speed. Sometimes I think of a riff and have to start it out slow and work it up but that's no different than any other instrument.

As far as my setup goes, I use a MacBook, Firebox and the Zen. I run cubase with LM4 MKII now but I'm working on switching to Battery for everything.
