Matt meets Beth from After The Party
Written by Matthew Loel T. Hepworth
Monday, 29 January 2007

Can you believe there are 2 Theremin bands in the state of Utah?  WellI I wasn't sure it was possible.  So I went to check out After The Party.  They're a trio (currently a duo) that plays "Martian music."  Beth Shively plays the Theremin along with vocals and assorted percussion while Tommy Dolph plays Wurlitzer piano, Hohner Melodia and handles lead vocals.  Masanori Asai normally plays guitar, but is currently away on sabbatical in Japan.  I (along with my love, Temis and daughter Maia) went to see them Sunday the 28th at Alchemy Coffee in Salt Lake City.  They play some very fun songs.  After their set, Beth and I had a chance to get acquainted.  She's a genuinely nice person and we had a blast talking about all things Theremin.  Her performance Theremin is homemade but based on the P.A.I.A. Theremin kit.  The pitch antenna is taller than I am and you have to step on a footswitch shaped like a tortoise to unmute the audio.  Very different from my Moog Theremins, but quite playable.  After The Party can be found at www.aftertheparty.us and they also have merchandise available, including a coloring book, which is about the coolest thing ever.  (I bought one.  At $5.00, I highly recommend it.)  I've added their website to the Zen Links section.  When you have a chance, go check them out.

Here's a photo of Beth and Me playing a duet (yeah, right. Tongue out)

Newsflash
There were 3 musicians who got bored with their instruments.  They decided to find the strangest and hardest instruments to play.  They played their new instruments.  They were happy.
